Fasting Glucose Test

Monitor fasting blood sugar to assess risk for prediabetes or other metabolic conditions.

This Fasting Glucose Test measures the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood after a period of fasting, offering valuable insight into how your body regulates blood sugar. Elevated fasting glucose levels may suggest insulin resistance, prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes—conditions linked to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. By evaluating this key marker through a lab-based glucose blood test, you can better understand your metabolic health and take proactive steps toward prevention or management.

Note: This test can help identify if your fasting blood sugar level is in a range that may suggest prediabetes or diabetes. Glucose is often evaluated in the context of other tests such as a Hemoglobin A1c Test to gain a full picture of your diabetes risk.

What's Tested
  • Glucose

Glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and serves as a vital energy source for the body. A fasting glucose test measures your blood sugar level after not eating or drinking anything except water for at least 8 hours. An elevated glucose level may indicate impaired insulin function or early signs of diabetes, while a low level could suggest hormonal or other metabolic concerns. Glucose levels can also be affected by factors such as acute illness, certain medications (like corticosteroids) and physical or emotional stress. These influences should be considered when interpreting test results, ideally in consultation with a healthcare provider.

FAQ

  • Both the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test and fasting glucose test measure blood sugar, but they serve different purposes:

    • HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. It measures the percentage of sugar-coated hemoglobin in your red blood cells
    • Fasting glucose provides a snapshot of your blood sugar at a single point in time, typically after 8–12 hours of fasting

While HbA1cis useful for long-term monitoring, a fasting glucose blood test is often used for initial diabetes screening or to detect short-term changes in blood sugar regulation.

  • Elevated fasting glucose levels may result from:

    • Insulin resistance, where cells don’t respond well to insulin
    • Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes
    • High-carbohydrate diets or frequent sugar intake
    • Sedentary lifestyle
    • Stress or illness, which can affect hormone balance
    • Hormonal conditions like Cushing syndrome
    • Certain medications, including corticosteroids
    • Genetic factors or family history of diabetes

You should consult with your healthcare provider with any abnormal results.

  • Lowering fasting glucose often involves lifestyle changes such as:

    • Eating a balanced diet with low-glycemic foods and more fiber
    • Reducing intake of refined carbs and sugary drinks
    • Exercising regularly, especially after meals
    • Managing stress and getting adequate sleep
    • Staying hydrated
    • Maintaining a healthy weight

In some cases, medications such as metformin or insulin therapy may be recommended. Always consult your healthcare provider to interpret your glucose blood test results and determine the best approach.

  • According to American Diabetes Association, a repeated high fasting glucose result (≥126 mg/dL) may indicate diabetes, while levels between 100–125 mg/dL suggest prediabetes.2 Elevated glucose means your body may not be using insulin effectively, leading to excess sugar in the bloodstream.

This can increase your risk for:

    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Kidney and nerve damage
    • Vision problems

A fasting glucose test helps detect these risks early, even before symptoms appear. If you’re experiencing new, persistent symptoms or have elevated glucose levels, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend additional testing or lifestyle changes to manage your blood sugar levels.

  • Normal: less than 100 mg/dL

    Prediabetes: 100–125 mg/dL

Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher (repeated on a second day)

These ranges are based on guidelines from the American Diabetes Association.

Always talk to a healthcare provider about what your results mean and what steps to take next.
