FAQ

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to foods may involve the skin, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, or the respiratory tract. Common symptoms are⁴:

Stomach cramps

Vomiting

Itchy mouth or lips

Hives or rash

Shortness of breath

Wheezing

Repetitive cough

Tight, hoarse throat; trouble swallowing

Dizziness or feeling faint

Swelling of the tongue and/or face, affecting the ability to talk or breathe
People who are allergic to proteins in specific foods develop IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies to those food proteins. IgE is a protective blood protein that is produced when you’re exposed to a substance that your body views as a threat. Therefore, measurable IgE may indicate the presence of an allergy.

If you suspect a food allergy, share your test results with your health care provider or allergist, who will take your family and medical history, and use this information to determine if a food allergy exists.
Your results will be provided to you through our secure online portal to view or print. Results are also made available through a secure portal to the independent healthcare provider who placed your test order. If you are accessing your results through your Labcorp Patient™ account, all users linked to the account will have access to all OnDemand test results. Results may also be provided to a local, state, and/or federal health authority; for example, many states require the testing laboratory and physician to report test results for certain communicable diseases, such as COVID-19, to local or state health departments.
