Custom Adrenal Function Test

Test cortisol and other key hormones to assess adrenal function.

Your adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate metabolism, blood pressure, fluid balance, and your body's response to physical and emotional stress. This test measures cortisol, DHEA-S, ACTH, aldosterone, and renin activity, providing insight into several hormones associated with adrenal function. Results should be interpreted in the context of your overall health, symptoms, medications, and your healthcare provider's assessment.

About This Test

What's Tested

FAQ

  • This test may be helpful for adults who want to learn more about their stress hormones, energy levels, or overall hormone balance.

Test results do not diagnose adrenal disorders and should not be used to explain symptoms on their own. A healthcare provider can help interpret results in the context of your medical history, medications, and other clinical information.

  • Adrenal function can be evaluated using several tests that measure hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, healthcare providers may recommend one or more tests to assess how well your adrenal glands are working.

Common tests used to evaluate adrenal function include:

    • Cortisol: Measures the body's primary stress hormone, which helps regulate metabolism, immune response, and blood pressure
    • Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH): Measures a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that signals the adrenal glands to produce cortisol
    • Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S): Measures a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that plays an important role in the production of testosterone and estrogen, as well as other bodily functions
    • Aldosterone: Evaluates a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance
    • Renin: Often measured alongside aldosterone to help assess how the body regulates blood pressure and sodium levels

Because adrenal hormone levels can be influenced by factors such as stress, medications, time of day, and underlying health conditions, results are typically interpreted together rather than in isolation.

  • Your adrenal glands help produce hormones that support your body's response to stress. When stress is ongoing or hormone levels are out of balance, you may experience symptoms such as:

    • Feeling tired or low on energy
    • Difficulty handling stress
    • Trouble sleeping
    • Mood changes, including irritability or anxiety
    • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
    • Changes in weight or appetite
    • Muscle weakness
    • Cravings for salty foods

These symptoms can be caused by many different health conditions and do not necessarily mean you have an adrenal disorder. Testing cortisol, DHEA-S, and ACTH levels may help provide additional insight into adrenal function and hormone balance. If you have persistent symptoms or concerns, speak with your healthcare provider.

  • No. This test provides information about hormones involved in adrenal gland function, but it cannot diagnose an adrenal disorder by itself. Your results should be reviewed along with your symptoms, medical history, and, if needed, additional testing recommended by your healthcare provider.

  • Your testing will be performed in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory. Labcorp provides leading-edge medical laboratory tests and services through a national network of primary clinical laboratories and specialty testing laboratories. Our labs perform regular quality assurance testing to ensure our results are accurate.

  • Your results will be provided to you through our secure online portal to view or print. Results are also made available through a secure portal to the independent healthcare provider who placed your test order.  If you are accessing your results through your Labcorp Patient™ account, all users linked to the account will have access to all OnDemand test results. Results may also be provided to a local, state, and/or federal health authority; for example, many states require the testing laboratory and physician to report test results for certain communicable diseases, such as COVID-19, to local or state health departments.
