Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Test

Learn more about hormone activity with a DHT blood test.

The Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Test measures the level of DHT in your blood. DHT is a hormone made from testosterone in your body and is a type of androgen, which are hormones that help develop male characteristics. DHT plays an important role in hair growth patterns, skin oil production, and androgen‑related processes in the body.

Because DHT influences how testosterone acts in certain tissues, measuring this hormone may provide insight into concerns such as hair thinning, acne, or other signs of hormone imbalance. Understanding DHT levels can help guide informed conversations with a healthcare provider about symptoms, lifestyle factors, or additional testing.

What's Tested
  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone made from testosterone that affects hair, skin and energy levels. This test measures the amount of DHT in your blood to assess androgen activity and testosterone conversion. High DHT levels may be associated with androgen‑related concerns such as hair thinning or loss, oily skin, acne, or symptoms linked to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Low DHT levels may be associated with low energy, reduced sex drive, or symptoms related to low testosterone.

FAQ

  • DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a powerful hormone made from testosterone. It plays an important role in hair growth patterns, skin health, sexual development, and overall hormone balance. Because it affects hair follicles and oil glands, changes in DHT are associated with hair growth and hair loss, acne, and other androgen-related symptoms.

  • High DHT levels can be influenced by genetics or by how actively the body converts testosterone into DHT through an enzyme called 5‑alpha reductase. Certain medical conditions or medications may also affect DHT levels. Elevated DHT is often associated with male‑pattern hair loss, oily skin, or increased body or facial hair.

  • You can check your DHT levels with a simple blood test. After purchasing this test, you’ll visit a Labcorp location for a quick sample draw. You will be notified by email when your results are ready, and you can share your results with your healthcare provider to support follow-up conversations about any necessary next steps.

  • High DHT levels may be associated with androgen‑related changes such as hair thinning or skin changes. Low DHT levels may be associated with reduced libido, fatigue, or other symptoms related to low androgen activity. Your results are best understood when reviewed with your symptoms and other hormone tests and can help support discussions with a healthcare provider about next steps, if needed.

  • Because DHT levels vary by age and sex, your test results will come with age‑ and sex‑specific reference ranges, so you can easily see whether your level falls within the expected range for you.

Consult with your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about the results of your DHT blood test.

  • Several factors can influence your DHT levels.

    • Age: DHT levels naturally decline as you get older
    • Weight: Higher body weight is associated with lower DHT levels
    • Medical conditions: Diabetes and other health conditions can affect DHT
    • Medications: Testosterone therapy increases DHT, while medications like finasteride (used for hair loss or prostate enlargement) decrease DHT
    • Time of day: Hormone levels are typically highest in the morning
  • Your testing will be performed in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory.
