Custom Digestive Health Test

Get insights into your digestive health.

The Custom Digestive Health Test combines three digestive health tests into one convenient panel. It includes an H. pylori urea breath test, a fecal calprotectin test, and a celiac disease antibody blood test. If you are experiencing symptoms such as bloating, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, or changes in bowel habits, these tests may provide helpful information that can be discussed with your healthcare provider as part of a broader evaluation.

This panel measures markers that may provide insight into various aspects of digestive health. H. pylori is a common bacterium that infects the stomach. Some people with H. pylori experience digestive symptoms, while others have none. Calprotectin is a protein that may increase when inflammation is present in the intestines. Celiac disease can lead to gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort, weight loss, loose stools, and other symptoms.

Results are one piece of your overall health picture and should be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history, and any additional evaluation recommended by your healthcare provider. You should see your healthcare provider for evaluation before considering this test if you have any concerning symptoms such as blood in your stool, fever, unusual weight loss, excessive diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

H. pylori
Urea Breath Test: This test requires you to fast and not drink liquids for at least one hour prior to collecting your sample. Individuals should not take antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole or lansoprazole), or bismuth preparations (such as Pepto-Bismol) within two weeks prior to testing.

Fecal Calprotectin Test: You will need to make two appointments for this test: one to pick up the stool collection kit and a second appointment to drop off the sample at a Labcorp patient service center location. See FAQ’s below for additional instructions on specimen collection and handling.

FAQ

  • After purchasing your test, visit a Labcorp patient service center to pick up your stool collection kit.

Collect your stool sample at home using the container and instructions provided. Once collected, tightly close the container. Write your name, date of birth, and collection time on the collection cup label. Place it inside the resealable plastic bag. If you are not returning the sample to Labcorp immediately after collection, you can store the sealed container in the freezer until you are ready to drop it off. Freezing helps maintain the sample’s integrity before it is processed.

For the best experience, plan to collect your sample on the same day you are scheduled to drop it off. Return your sample to a Labcorp patient service center on the same day it is collected, whenever possible. Visits may be scheduled online.

  • There is no single test that evaluates every aspect of gut health. Healthcare providers may use breath tests, stool tests, blood tests, or a combination of approaches depending on symptoms and health concerns.

The Custom Digestive Health Test combines three different tests that evaluate the presence of H. pylori bacteria in the stomach, fecal calprotectin (a marker associated with intestinal inflammation) and celiac-associated antibodies.

  • For the Celiac Disease Antibody Test: This test is not intended for patients already on a gluten-free diet.  Before considering this test, you should see your healthcare provider for evaluation if you have any concerning symptoms such as blood in your stool, fever, unusual weight loss, excessive diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

For the H. pylori Urea Breath Test: During your visit to a Labcorp patient service center (PSC), you’ll provide two breath samples. First, you’ll exhale into a collection bag after taking a deep breath and holding it briefly. Next, you’ll drink a fruit flavored solution containing the testing ingredient. After 15 minutes, you’ll provide a second breath sample using the same process.

This test requires that you fast and not drink liquids for at least one hour prior to collecting your sample. Individuals should not take antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole or lansoprazole), or bismuth preparations (such as Pepto-Bismol) within two weeks prior to testing, as this may lead to inaccurate results.1

For the Fecal Calprotectin Test: You will need to make two appointments: one to pick up the stool collection kit and a second appointment to drop off the sample at a Labcorp patient service center location. It is recommended to drop off the sample the same day it is collected.

  • There is no single test that is best for checking gut health. The right gut health test depends on the question you are trying to answer. This panel combines multiple tests to provide broader digestive health insights1-3:

    • Celiac antibody testing evaluates immune responses associated with celiac disease
    • H. pylori testing detects a common bacterium that can infect the stomach and may be present in people with or without digestive symptoms
    • Fecal calprotectin testing evaluates intestinal inflammation

Testing should be reviewed with your provider alongside your symptoms, medical history, and other clinical information.

  • No. This test does not measure the composition or diversity of bacteria in your gut microbiome.

Instead, it evaluates three specific areas of digestive health:

    • Celiac-associated antibodies
    • H. pylori infection in the stomach
    • Intestinal inflammation
  • No. The Celiac Disease Antibody Test in this panel measures antibodies associated with celiac disease.

Results may help identify whether additional evaluation should be discussed with a healthcare provider.3,4

Test results should always be interpreted in the context of your symptoms, medical history, and other clinical information.
