Custom Vegetarian & Vegan Nutrient Test

Measure key nutrients for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet in one convenient panel.

A vegetarian or vegan diet can be a healthy way to eat, but some key nutrients may be harder to get from plant-based foods alone. This panel measures nutrients that help support red blood cell production, energy metabolism, thyroid function, immune health, bone health, and more.

This panel includes commonly ordered lab tests for vegetarians and vegans, measuring nutrients associated with anemia, as well as iodine, zinc, and vitamin D. This test may be a good fit if you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, recently changed your diet, take supplements, or want more information before talking with a healthcare provider.

FAQ

  • Common lab tests for vegetarians and vegans include an anemia profile, which tests levels of ferritin and other iron-related markers, as well as vitamin B12 and folate. Vitamin D, zinc, and iodine are also key nutrients to consider evaluating for those following a plant-based diet. Iron, vitamin B12, and iodine are often top of mind for vegetarians and vegans because animal foods, seafood, dairy products, and fortified foods are common sources of these nutrients. 1,2,3,4

  • Individuals following vegetarian or vegan diets may wish to evaluate certain nutrients as part of an overall review of their nutrition. This panel includes vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin D, along with iron-related markers, iodine, and zinc for a broader look at plant-based nutrition.

  • Vitamin B12 plays an important role in nerve function. Low B12 has been linked with nerve-related concerns, but numbness, tingling, or pain can have many causes and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.5 This test measures B12 levels as one part of a broader review, but it cannot diagnose the cause of neuropathy.

  • This test can be very helpful if you take supplements. Vitamins and minerals can affect your nutrient levels, but it can be hard to know what your levels are without testing. This panel measures nutrients that are important for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet to consider, including vitamin B12, vitamin D, iodine, zinc, and iron-related markers. Your results can help you have a more informed conversation with a healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing any supplements.

  • This panel does not directly measure antioxidant levels. However, it does measure nutrients that support important body functions, including zinc, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, iodine, and iron-related markers. Antioxidants are found in many fruits, vegetables, and grains. Some antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, are also available as dietary supplements.

  • No. The tests included in the Custom Vegetarian & Vegan Nutrient Test do not require fasting. You may eat and drink normally before your appointment.

  • You’ll be able to view your results for each test in your Labcorp Patient™ account via your MyLabcorp™ app or at MyLabcorp.com as they become available. This panel includes multiple tests, and you should be able to see your complete results online within 2 to 4 days after your samples arrive at our lab.

  • Your testing will be performed in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory. Labcorp provides leading-edge medical laboratory tests and services through a national network of primary clinical laboratories and specialty testing laboratories. Our labs perform regular quality assurance testing to ensure our results are accurate.

  • Your results will be provided to you through our secure online portal to view or print. Results are also made available through a secure portal to the independent healthcare provider who placed your test order.  If you are accessing your results through your Labcorp Patient™ account, all users linked to the account will have access to all OnDemand test results. Results may also be provided to a local, state, and/or federal health authority; for example, many states require the testing laboratory and physician to report test results for certain communicable diseases, such as COVID-19, to local or state health departments.
