Biotin (Vitamin B7) Test

Want insight into your biotin levels? Start with a vitamin B7 test.

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, plays an important role in helping your body convert food into energy and supporting normal metabolic function. This test measures the level of biotin in your blood, providing insight into your vitamin B7 status.

Understanding your biotin levels may be helpful if you've recently changed your diet, take supplements, have concerns about nutrient absorption, or want a better picture of your nutritional health.

This blood test measures biotin levels as one part of a bigger health picture. Results should be reviewed with a healthcare professional, who can interpret your biotin levels in the context of your overall health, health history, diet, supplements, medicines, and any symptoms or concerns you may have.

What's Tested
  • Vitamin B7 (Biotin)

Biotin is a B vitamin found in foods and supplements. It helps your body turn carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy and supports normal metabolism. Biotin also plays an important role in maintaining healthy hair, skin, nails, and nervous system function. Most people get enough biotin from foods such as eggs, meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. A vitamin B7 (biotin) test measures the level of biotin in your blood. Lower biotin levels may be seen in some people with reduced dietary intake, conditions that affect nutrient absorption, pregnancy, long-term use of certain anticonvulsant medications, or other factors that affect biotin status. Higher levels may occur in people taking biotin-containing supplements. A healthcare professional can help explain what your result may mean for you.

FAQ

  • Biotin is a B vitamin that helps your body turn food into energy. It plays an important role in the health of your hair, skin, nails, and nervous system. Most people get enough biotin from foods like eggs, meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and dairy products.

  • Biotin (vitamin B7) levels can be measured with a blood test that evaluates the amount of biotin circulating in your blood.

No single test provides a complete picture of nutritional health. Biotin test results are one piece of information that should be considered together with other health and nutrition factors.

  • Low biotin levels can affect multiple systems in the body. Common symptoms of biotin deficiency may include:

    • Thinning hair or hair loss
    • Brittle or weak nails
    • A red, scaly rash (especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth)
    • Fatigue or low energy
    • Mood changes, such as depression or irritability
    • Tingling or numbness in the hands and feet

Because these symptoms can be associated with many different health conditions, it's important to talk with a healthcare provider if you're concerned about a possible vitamin deficiency.

  • A blood test can measure your biotin level but results alone cannot determine whether low biotin levels are causing your symptoms. A low vitamin B7 (biotin) level may be suspected based on symptoms such as hair thinning, brittle nails, skin changes, or fatigue. However, these signs alone cannot confirm a biotin deficiency. A healthcare provider can review your symptoms, medical history, and dietary habits and determine whether laboratory testing or further evaluation is appropriate. Since true biotin deficiency is rare in healthy individuals, professional assessment is the best way to determine whether low B7 levels may be contributing to your symptoms.

  • If you take biotin supplements, including many over-the-counter hair, skin, and nail vitamins, they may affect the results of other blood tests. Biotin can cause some lab test results to appear falsely high or falsely low, including tests for:

    • Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4)
    • Hormone levels (PTH, vitamin D)
  • Your testing will be performed in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory.
