Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) levels indicate the presence of antibodies against the thyroid peroxidase enzyme, which is essential for thyroid hormone production. Elevated TPO antibody levels may suggest an autoimmune response against the thyroid, often associated with conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease. High TPO antibody levels may also indicate ongoing inflammation or damage to the thyroid, which may lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. However, TPO antibody levels alone do not determine thyroid function. Thyroid function tests, such as TSH and free T4 are needed to assess thyroid activity.
Note: This test does not diagnose or determine the cause of thyroid-related conditions. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare provider if you have any questions about your result.
