Chickenpox Immunity Test

Unsure of your immunity status? Test for chickenpox immunity.

The Chickenpox Immunity Test can help determine whether you have immunity to Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) from a past infection or vaccination. The test measures VZV IgG antibodies, which are produced by the immune system after exposure to the virus or the chickenpox vaccine. Results are reported as either reactive or non-reactive only. A reactive result means antibodies were detected and may indicate immunity to chickenpox. A non-reactive result means antibodies were not detected. This test does not provide a numerical antibody level. If you need proof of immunity for work, school, or another requirement, check whether a reactive/non-reactive result meets the documentation requirements.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Symptoms include itchy, blister-like rashes that can spread across your body. Although vaccination has greatly reduced the number of cases, knowing your immunity status may still be important for school, work, healthcare requirements, pregnancy planning, travel, or personal peace of mind. If you're unsure whether you've had chickenpox or received the vaccine, this test can provide clarity about your immunity status.

Note: This test is not intended to diagnose an active chickenpox infection. If you are experiencing symptoms of chickenpox or believe you have been exposed to the virus, contact a healthcare provider for appropriate evaluation and next steps.

FAQ

  • While there is no definitive answer in knowing how long varicella (chickenpox) vaccine immunity lasts, some studies suggest that people vaccinated against varicella are protected for at least 10 to 20 years.3

  • If you’re not sure whether you have varicella (chickenpox) immunity, a chickenpox test may be right for you. Taking a chickenpox immunity test will let you know if you have developed antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in response to a prior chickenpox infection or vaccination.  You can discuss your test results with your provider to determine whether and when you should consider another vaccination to maintain your immunity.

  • Your testing will be performed in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory.
